Big Bear Cafe: The Place to Be Seen

When I walked into Big Bear Cafe this past weekend, I had high expectations; my good friend used to work there and raved about it frequently. I found a parking spot on the immediate-most side street which put a huge smile on my face, and enjoyed the farmers market on the other street facing the cafe. It was a gorgeous sunny day, and lots of hustle and bustle surrounded Big Bear… There’s an outdoor patio with lots of nice wooden tables, and a large interior with high ceilings.…

CLOSED: Little Red Fox Market & Coffee Shop: A Secret Gem

Little Red Fox Market & Coffee Shop may not be listed on all of the big lists for DC coffee shops yet, but it soon will be. Situated on the strip of stores in Cleveland Park right next to Politics & Prose and Comet Ping Pong Pizza, I first happened upon Little Red Fox quite by mistake, while picking up a book at Politics & Prose.  The shop was closed at the time, as it was a Monday, but I felt excited just from reading the sign and seeing the interior…

Sidamo Coffee & Tea: Aladdin & Jasmine’s Favorite Place

Sidamo Coffee & Tea, located in NoMa, is one of those elusive, cool places that you don’t really find on the “beaten path.”  Grab your magic carpet and go there, though. It’s worth it. Marked with a large red tea kettle pouring down over the doorway, Sidamo Coffee & Tea’s sign is definitely eye-catching.  The tea kettle isn’t like Mrs. Potts’ round body from Beauty and The Beast, but rather more skinny and Middle Eastern, a la Aladdin. I bet if someone rubbed on it and made a…

Ebenezers Coffeehouse: A Great Nook To Study In

A few weeks ago, my lovely roommate asked me: “Hey, what’s the best local coffee shop to study in?”  She absolutely had me stumped… This was a new way to look at #timecupsoul… Given my perfectionism, I set out to find the truth for her. No later than 11 am, and quite by accident, I found my way into Ebenezers Coffee House, and it was the answer. The mecca of a great study-friendly coffee shop. How do I know this? There were patrons studying in it.  Also, personal choice;…

CLOSED: Chinatown Coffee Co: The Place for Alternative Fans

This morning, I journeyed down to Chinatown with every intention of going to Vigilante Coffee’s pop-up cafe.  Once I arrived on the scene, it wasn’t there. Anyone else know why Hogo’s is boarded up? Luckily, there was a close second for coffee shop choices in the area: Chinatown Coffee Co. After a short walk from the Chinatown metro, I arrived to the entrance. After walking right into the open doorway, I noticed the interior: garage-like. Chinatown Coffee Co. has a brick wall interior, and a slick…floor that almost feels…

The Blind Dog Cafe at Darnell’s: For an Old Hollywood Gritty Morning

The Blind Dog Cafe at Darnell’s uses Vigilante Coffee Company coffee, and Blind Dogs’ baristas know how to handle the roast they’re given. I was insanely impressed by this coffee shop. The outside of The Blind Dog Cafe has some bizarre Western memorabilia which I didn’t quite understand, but I’m sure that there must be an epic reason for it. This place is…legend. Maybe Clint Eastwood showed up one day and dropped them off. Though I was there very early in the morning, there were certainly other people scattered…

Harrar Coffee & Roastery: An Oasis in Columbia Heights

Harrar Coffee & Roastery wasn’t listed on any of the websites listing the “best coffee shops in DC,” but I was lucky enough to drive past it one weekend. I saw the sign “coffee and roastery” and jotted down the name in my phone’s Notes app. “Roastery” is enough to get my attention; it’s not every day a coffee shop roasts their own beans… Situated in Columbia Heights with a totally unassuming exterior, I didn’t really know what to expect from Harrar when I returned solo to review it.…
