How To Make Dalgona Whipped Chocolate Milk/Hot Chocolate
Dalgona coffee is quite the current rage on social media. The recipe is a 1:1:1 ratio of instant coffee, sugar and hot water that creates a sweet, fluffy, whipped topping, that sits on top of iced milk. The creation came from Korean show Pyunstorang, “in which celebrities compete to come up with new products for convenience stores. Actor Jung Il-woo, who had encountered the coffee in Macau, christened it ‘dalgona’ after a Korean candy that resembles the foamy brown topping,” according to this article.
It’s very easy to find dalgona coffee recipes, instruction videos, social media posts, etc, all over the inter-web. But slowly, bloggers and consumers are trying to make “dalgona coffee” with other ingredients, such as chai, matcha, and cocoa. This is not an easy feat. We spent a few days and many failed attempts to make a dalgona chocolate drink recipe just for you.
Before you begin, please note that the natural chemical compounds in instant coffee allow it to whip up into a foam texture, and if you try to replicate the dalgona coffee recipe with cocoa powder instead (1:1:1, as above), you will only get a sugary chocolate syrup, that, while delicious and very sweet, does not whip into a fluffy “foam” like the coffee.
To create that dalgona coffee texture with cocoa, you need to use egg whites, aquafaba or whipped cream. We had whipped cream in the house, and so decided to use it for this recipe, but be sure to check back in the next two weeks or so when we also create a recipe using egg whites or aquafaba!

Dalgona Whipped Chocolate Recipe:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup whipped cream (cold)
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (you may like one of these)
- Mix all ingredients for a few minutes (using a mixer or whisk) until peaks form. (Do not over whip into thick whipped cream. You’ll see in the video, we tried using just 1 tbsp of sugar but realized we needed two tbsp sugar for the correct foam/whipped consistency.) Spoon over an iced milk of your choice.
- Enjoy a timecupsoul: a moment of serenity with coffee or chocolate 🙂
